Toni Morrison--author of Song of Solomon and Tar Baby--is a writer of remarkable powers: her novels, brilliantly acclaimed for their passion, their dazzling language and their lyric and emotional force, combine the unassailable truths of experience and emotion with the vision of legend and imagination. This book walks around you over and over again, dizzying you deeper into different characters' pasts and thoughts. When it reaches a climax, it's like you fall over, and then are pulled back up, and made dizzy again. I found myself entranced with Morrison's writing. I've never read her before, except 'The Bluest Eye' over 15 years ago in college that I don't remember it at all. I listened to the audiobook, too, which is narrated by Morrison. I have to admit, there were times I didn't understand what was happening, or what had just happened. The story would press on, and I'd have to make sense of it. That's why this is 4 stars for me, but it's probably my own flaw in being able to understand. However, I also think that's the point, to not quite understand sometimes. I will reread this at some point.
