Tsundoku reviewed The Harrowing of Hell by Evan Dahm
Amazing use of color and stark B&W, Ambiguous narrative
5 stars
Content warning Spoiler for how it ends? I think how it ends is probably obvious but just in case
To be honest I picked this up a year or two back because I saw that it was by Evan Dahm (Vattu is one of my favorite comics EVER). I'm an ex-Catholic, agnostic on belief, currently more interested in Jesus as Historical Figure than Jesus as Religious Figure. I do not know how someone who is devoutly Christian would feel about this Graphic Novel so please keep that in mind with my review.
Dahm is also seemingly interested in Jesus more as a historical figure (though uh, spoiler for Easter: he comes back). The Gospel of Mark (And some what is it "non-canonical" (?) gospels I'm not familiar with) are used as sources.
The book is in Black & White except for the color Red-- used only for Romans, violence, and Hell itself. It works extremely well. At the end you see a Half-eaten pomegranate, which I believe (without looking it up) is less a reference to Hades & Persephone (though it's probably that too) and more that I believe Figs and Pomegranates have also been listed as candidates for the Forbidden Fruit.
I read it this past weekend because it felt like fitting timing (For those from the future, this past weekend was Good Friday / Easter Sunday weekend), but I think it'd be good no matter the time.
