A story about living in the Ozarks as a hippie community.

I didn’t have any empathy for the protagonist, who is doing some things she shouldn’t and doesn’t have any character growth from that, nor for the plot, which doesn’t seem to have anything to do with the past or memory or secrets in particular.

I liked this because it's truly Alice's story. In the same way that Quentin's story is all about Quentin, Alice's story is all about Alice, and Quentin is just a bit player in it. Her own brain getting in her way, her disconnection from the world, and her ambivalence towards her parents -- not quite hate, not quite love -- go a long way to tying this book together, and I love her description of niffinhood.

I do really like superhero stories where the superheros don't fight, and instead go through the odder parts of being a superhero: dealing with paparazzi and wondering who you can trust to date and be intimate with, dealing with the likelihood that your family will read about your death in the newspaper, realizing that the guy you hate and have been fighting against thinks that he's the hero and you're the villain. This is Astro City in a nutshell, and it's great.
